Smart further development of the successful model
The expectation
At first glance, the successor hardly differs from its predecessor, the Z3. Why should it? The Z3 was perfect for anyone who wanted a sophisticated alternative to Apple and could do without mediocre mass-produced devices.
First impression
The new XZ has a strikingly understated appearance; even the XPERIA lettering on the black back of the case is matte. The difference to the mid-range is immediately noticeable, however, in the absolutely first-class feel and the understated design. Where others flaunt logos and lettering, the XZ has something simply sublime. The all-black casing is interrupted only by the silver power button, which is positioned slightly higher than on the Z3. A 23 MP camera with phase-detection autofocus and laser AF scans the surroundings, calculates where moving objects will be at the moment the shutter is released, and adjusts the autofocus to that position. The internal storage offers a respectable 32 GB, which is sufficient even for heavy users. Expansion of up to another 128 GB is possible via a micro SD card. The RAM is sufficient at 3 GB, although not top-of-the-line.
Setup and operation
The Sony XZ comes in a sturdy white box containing the device, charging cable, and headphones. Setup is standard: Turn it on, connect it to the internet and mobile network – if necessary, restore data from a backup – and then the device is ready to use. Sony offers several options for backup and restore. The Companion saves the essential data and restores it to the PC via a USB cable. In the case of the switch from the Z3 to the XZ, the transfer worked smoothly via NFC. Briefly tap phone to phone (activate NFC beforehand) – specify who is the donor and who is the recipient – and the transfer from the old to the new device actually works. At first glance, only minor changes have been made to the operating concept. The fingerprint sensor for unlocking the device works very quickly. The Clear All button, which closes all active apps with one click, is now at the top of the screen, making it difficult to reach with your thumb. The power button is also higher up on the right side of the case and no longer where your thumb naturally holds the phone. The volume buttons are black on a black background and have no pressure point where you can tell whether you're pressing the volume up or down button. The XZ charges pretty quickly using a new USB Type-C connector. It reaches 70% after just one hour. There's also the new Quick Charge 3.0 option, which can do this in just 30 minutes, but the included charging cable isn't designed for this. A normal workday with a few calls, reading emails, a quick game, and the occasional splash of YouTube and Facebook means the black monolith needs to be plugged in in the evening. 2 days of battery life can only be achieved with restrictions such as deactivating Bluetooth and mobile data when the screen is locked, reduced brightness, and power saving mode. But who wants that?
Image and sound
The display achieves enormous brightness, which is clearly reflected in the reproduction of primary colors in particular. Green grass, blue skies, and red T-shirts are reproduced with a high saturation, making the predecessor look somewhat dull. The new camera impresses across the board with its very fast autofocus, which actually guarantees fairly good sharpness even with fast-moving objects. Even in dark environments, the camera clearly achieves more contrast and depth than its predecessor. The integrated chip for color measurement/white balance pays off here. The autofocus sometimes struggles when zooming in, but there is the option to manually adjust it. Videos are also possible in 4K via an internal app; the camera gets noticeably warm during this process. Listening to music works reasonably well with the built-in speakers, but the quality isn't sufficient for extended listening. Things improve with the included earbuds. A particularly deep bass can be experienced. www.movieman.de
